On “High in Friends Places” - the group’s first release - lifelong DIY stalwart Sidney radically reinvents his sound. Eschewing his standard garage band instrumentation, Sidney opted instead to utilize low-grade keyboards, a madcap approach to sampling, and his trusty digital eight-track recorder. The result is chaotic, electronic collage-punk: imported Casio beats, riffs and beats (sometimes stolen from his former band Uppertiers’ own back catalog), and an absolute unwillingness to cede ground to any one style or genre.

Joe Sidney’s stubborn insistence on total DIY freedom (he’s still never stepped foot in a recording studio) allows for a singular, idiosyncratic vision to shine through. The primitive drum machine punk of “Report to the Floor” and “Shopping Song” betray a heavy influence from Le Tigre, while “Crazy Talk” and “Digame” are some kind of bit-crushed dancehall."

Careening through nine tracks in 25 minutes, “Friends in High Places” is as sui generis as punk gets.
